After serialization, pharmaceutical products are grouped into multiple aggregation levels to build a complete traceability hierarchy. Individual units are first combined into multipacks, each assigned a unique serial number and encoded with the serial identities of all contained units.

Next, multiple multipacks are aggregated into cases, and each case is marked with a unique identifier containing the full serialized relationship of its contents. Finally, cases are assembled onto pallets, each labeled with a unique pallet serial number embedded with complete hierarchical traceability data.
