Eggs are marked to show important information like the production date, farm ID, and egg grade. This helps with traceability, freshness tracking, and meeting food safety regulations. It also builds consumer trust by showing where and when the egg was produced.
Eggs are marked using food-safe ink through a process called egg stamping. The mark is usually printed directly on the shell with a small code that may include the producer number, farming method (e.g., 0 = organic, 3 = caged), and country of origin.
Egg stamping is done by automated machines in packing facilities. As eggs pass along a conveyor, the machine gently prints each shell with a tiny amount of edible ink. This system ensures every egg is consistently and safely labeled without damaging the shell.
